HI! I’m Kacey! I am a planner through and through and wholeheartedly believe that event planning should be FUN! The most important part of planning your wedding or event is enjoying the process. This is such a special time in your lives so it is essential that the process remains stress-free, creating the happiest of memories for years to come! What’s the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced while planning an event and how did you overcome it?
The unpredictable weather of New England can definitely be challenging. Being located on the coast, most of the weddings we plan at KME are outdoors throughout the Spring, Summer and Fall months and are often by the ocean. From heatwaves to pop-up hurricane-force winds and torrential downpours, I’ve seen it all.
One of those days I will never forget took place a few years ago. I was onsite for a gorgeous oceanfront wedding and the day started off so wonderfully, the weather was looking great, but in true New England fashion it turned in an instant. With an outdoor tented ceremony and reception, you always have to have a plan b (maybe even a plan c!). We were less than an hour away from the ceremony, 30 minutes until guests arrived, and the radar was showing torrential rain approaching – eek – So, with a lot of teamwork and a little pixie dust, we moved everything under the reception tent, lined the dance floor with chairs, created an aisle and had the most beautiful backdrop being right on the water (thank you clear tent sides!)
Sure enough, just as guests started to arrive, so did the storm. Thankfully I always have about 47 umbrellas in my car; truly a staple item around here! In the end, the ceremony was beautiful and the thunderstorm ended just in time for cocktail hour to be enjoyed outside and that night I saw the most beautiful sunset of the summer!
There is always a silver lining. Keeping calm under pressure, having backup plans, a killer vendor team, and having experience dealing with these situations makes all the difference.
What are 2 trends in the event planning industry that you’re excited about?
Bold Uses of Color and Sustainability are two of my favorite wedding trends right now! Don’t get me wrong, I love a neutral color palette with lots of blush, dusty blue, champagne, etc., but adding a statement color or two really makes everything pop!
Now let’s chat about sustainability. This may be my favorite trend thus far! From recycled paper for your stationery to using plants as opposed to cut flowers for centerpieces. There are so many ways to bring in unique design elements all while being proud of your eco-friendly wedding!
What are some tips for creating an elegant and memorable event on a tight budget?
No matter what your budget may be, adding personalized touches will always make your wedding or event more memorable. Things like monogrammed cocktail napkins and drink stirrers, restroom amenity baskets, or a basket of flip flops by the dance floor that align with your color palette, aren’t expensive. Adding in these small personalized details that enhance your design will pull everything together. I’m a firm believer that a strong design plan, color palette, and keeping everything cohesive will elevate any event you’re planning!
If you had unlimited resources, what would your dream client and event look like?
I know we’ve already talked about trends here, but something else that I’m loving more and more are smaller, more intimate weddings, especially if they happen to be in Europe! My dream wedding would bring my love of planning and travel together. Planning a wedding on a yacht off the coast of Greece, at a castle on a hill in Germany, or under the Northern Lights in Iceland all sound dreamy to me! Adding in a wonderful, grateful, fun, excited, madly in love couple would be true perfection.
How important are your relationships with vendors and what are some ways that you successfully cultivate and ensure good rapport?
Vendor relationships are extremely important! Having a rockstar vendor team makes all the difference. With the years of experience I have in the wedding and event industry I know that things will not always go according to plan, but when you have a great team of vendors that you trust you can face any challenge with more confidence.
Communication is key! Keeping everyone informed throughout the planning process, on event day, and even afterward will create great relationships between you and your vendor team(s).
What inspired you to launch your own company in the event industry? How long did it take from initially having the idea to setting up and starting to attract a client base?
I’ve always known that I wanted to own my own business, but for a long time, I thought it would be a bakery specializing in wedding cakes. (Fun fact, I went to school for Baking and Pastry Arts and Entrepreneurship).
After working in the event industry for several years I was at a point where I knew I needed a change. It was one of those, if not now, when, type of decisions. I’ve always found inspiration from my peers. A colleague and friend of mine had taken the leap of faith to leave his job and start his own business almost a year before I took the plunge. Seeing how much he was loving his life as a newly self-employed Event Planner encouraged me even more!
It took me several months to get my new business off the ground, but it’s definitely worth the hard work!
